Our philosophy...

...is to give each horse the time and attention they need.

Sue Gardner Racing is a small, family-run business centred around Sue Gardner, a licensed National Hunt and flat trainer. The small, but dedicated team go to great lengths to ensure that each horse is looked after in a way which unlocks their individual racing potential.

The team pride themselves in giving each horse the time and attention they need to cope with the stresses and strains of racing. Whether it’s the four-year-old youngster just about to embark on its career or the racing veteran, owners can rest assured that their pride and joy is in safe, capable and experienced hands.

Sue’s husband Des has also worked hard over the past few years to build up a small herd of ex-racing broodmares which have been taken to first-class National Hunt stallions. As a result, they have built an impressive portfolio of good quality youngstock to enter training or which are for sale. Find out more on our For sale page.

Sue started working in the racing industry aged 16. She worked for numerous trainers over the years, including David Morley and David Nicholson, for whom she rode on the flat as one of the first lady jockeys to ride in races with starting stalls. Sue also rode extensively in Point-to-Point races. Throughout her career, Sue started young horses, schooled and developed them and achieved considerable racing successes, first for other trainers and soon as a trainer herself.

Our story

After wanting to train and race some home-bred thoroughbreds herself, Sue took out a trainer’s permit. Soon afterwards, friends kept asking her to train for them too and so the business slowly grew into the busy race yard you can see at Woodhayes Farm today.
